Without the internet around to provide an unbroken timeline of artistic events to a potentially endless landscape of wandering eyes, records that couldn’t achieve access to a viable fanbase in the 1980s have mostly, inevitably found themselves buried in the sands of time forever. Many creative masterworks, no matter how well-appreciated at the time of their initial pressing — if mismanaged by independent, boutique labels that couldn’t stay afloat financially — have either approached or gone completely off the cliff edge of existence. But thanks to the interplay between user-submitted content on the web and the way platforms help listeners discover it, some records do actually manage to climb back out of the sand.
By the end of this course, you’ll have the essential skills of sampling, producing, and arranging hip-hop beats and full tracks down pat. You’ll be starting to look inward at your own voice as a producer, and be equipped with the tools needed to succeed in this new (or perhaps very familiar) space. Specifically, you’ll learn about drums, bass, loops, structures, and sampling techniques, and how to utilize arrangement, harmony, and melody to express your ideas with the production methods to bring them to life.

Dhil-un Taht Shajarat Al-Zaqum draws lyrically upon pre-Islamic and Quranic poetry, exploring themes of existential angst over a backdrop of abstract, grimy beats. It’s not a conventional listen in any sense, but even without being able to understand the Arabic lyrics, there’s something immediate and emotional about MSYLMA’s plaintive vocals. Bridges usually occur after the second chorus and before the last chorus. They’re where you twist your concept one final time, or say anything you might not have had the chance to say up until that point in the song. intros and outros are the lead in and closing out of the song. All three of these things can be instrumental or space filled with some form of lyrics or motif melody. These song sections can add heavy hitting emotion and hooks to capture your listener, basically anywhere you place them.
When Houston’s song focuses on notes 1, 3, and 5, it’s focusing on the notes that rank highest in what music theorists call the “tonal hierarchy.” Hughes describes it as such: “The tonal hierarchy is this idea that certain notes are sort of more important than others.” In the major key, we generally talk about four levels of note importance.

If you need it for when you finally get around to starting that ’90s throwback stoner metal project, it’s fine to save it for a rainy day. But if there’s nothing on the horizon where it would be useful it’s probably not doing you much good.
Why? Often, a lack of empathy for the audiences that support us or the venues that host us is partly to blame. If you’re enthusiastically writing venues in your city but never getting responses, don’t get upset about it — just make an effort to think about the reasons why this could be the case. Are you targeting venues too large and established? Are your recorded demos not good enough to showcase your talent and sound, or do you not even have demos to begin with? (If so, you should rectify that.) Are you sure you’re not making any avoidable spelling, grammar, or colloquial linguistic errors in your booking emails?
That’s it. There’s several variations to each of those items but the principal is all the same; take your human voice and convert it into digital 0s and 1s so that (hopefully) thousands of people can listen to it! Hooray!
